Week 1

I’m sitting on my bed this morning and through my window I can see just above the trees, a Filipino flag flying.   It’s a surreal feeling for me…. yet feels perfect all at the same time.   I’ve been in the Philippines for one week and I have had the chance to experience so much already.  My first day here was a full one.  I got to join in with a children’s group that meets in the Harvell’s home.  On Saturday afternoons approx 25 children come to hear Bible Stories, learn bible verses, play games, eat snacks, etc.

Later in the evening on Saturday’s the Harvells host a house church.  I was blessed to stand with my new friends in the Philippines and sing, “He Knows My Name”

I have a Maker
He formed my heart
Before even time began
My life was in his hands
I have a Father
He calls me His own
He'll never leave me
No matter where I go

He knows my name
He knows my every thought
He sees each tear that falls
And He hears me when I call

Tuesday morning I woke up to wind gusts and hard rain... My first Typhoon!  The power was out at around 7am.  Several trees were blown down and major flooding      occurred.  Thankfully the area where the Harvell's live did not have any major damage.  We were without power for 2 days.  What a way to start my first week here!

Thursday night I got to meet with an awesome group of girls.  We spent time getting to know each other, shared a snack, and played a game.  We are going to be spending time together every Thursday while I am in Manila.  I’m really looking forward to getting to know them more!

Just traveling through

                                                                                                                                9/23/11
I woke up this morning way to early with mixed feelings of excitement and fear.  I have spent so much time thinking, preparing, worrying about this journey, and now it is time to go…ready or not.   My dad and I loaded up his truck and headed for STL.  I wish I could say that I was facing the start of my journey with courage… but I can’t.  I started crying before even leaving the house. (I hadn't really recovered since saying goodbye to my mom last night).  He did his best to distract me by blaring the disco and oldies station.  My favorite was when “I will survive” came on. ☺  I think I was just overwhelmed with the entire experience (and it’s no big secret that I’m a crier).
We arrived at the airport and carried in my very heavy bags.  I went to check in fearing that my bags would be over on weight and that I would have to pull things out at the last minute.  I sat my bags on the scale and sure enough… both bags were over.  I stood looking at the man helping me as he put the stickers on both of them and checked them without saying a word.   I sighed a huge relief and added it to my list of “reasons the Lord is clearly in this journey with me”.   We headed to security and the tears started flowing.  I couldn’t help it… I said goodbye to my dad and made my way through security with tears streaming down my face.  After lots of strange looks and “a random security screening” I boarded the plane.  As the plane took off and I watched Missouri and Illinois get smaller I asked the Lord to keep my family and friends safe.  I spent time thinking about all of the people who have poured into my life, who have pushed me and encouraged me, the people who have loved me unconditionally, who have always stood beside me.
My flights were pretty uneventful.  I watched movies and thankfully slept quite a bit.  I met several kind people along the way who were also travelling to the Philippines.  I endured a 1-hour flight, a 13.5-hour flight and a 3.5-hour flight before landing in Manila.  I stepped off the plane and instantly started sweating! Turns out it's still hot in the Philippines. :)  I stood in the immigration line, picked up my bags (all of them!) and met the Harvell’s.  I made it!

I'll update as I can.  Thank you for praying and being an incredible support to me!

5 weeks...

Only 5 weeks until I leave for the Philippines.  The summer has flown by and I can't believe it is almost September.  Welcome Week has started on SBU's campus and Bolivar is flooded with college students again.  It feels so strange to not be a part of it all.  I have so many mixed emotions, but feel thankful for the time of rest I am having.  Here are some ways you can be praying for me...
1.  Pray for me as I continue to transition away from SBU and being a Resident Director.
2.  Pray for me as I begin the process of saying goodbye to friends and family.
3.  Pray for my flight. (this may sound silly, but I would love an aisle seat it makes 15 hours on a plane
     much easier to endure.)
4.  Pray for the Philippines: the people and places I will encounter.
5.  Pray for financial support.  I still need approx. $1000

I'll be posting more specific prayers requests in the next few weeks.  I am so appreciative of your prayers and support.  I'll leave you with a song I've had on repeat a lot lately...

Not angels, nor demons, no power on earth or heaven
Not distance, nor danger, no trouble now or ever

Nothing can take me from your great love
Forever this truth remains

I belong, I belong to you

Not hardship, nor hunger, no pain or depth of sorrow
Not weakness, nor failure, no broken dream or promise

My story...

My New Years resolution for 2011 was for new journeys and increased faith.   I knew that my time at SBU was coming to an end, but I had no idea what my future would hold.  Three days later I boarded a plane for my second trip to the Philippines.   I knew that the two weeks I would spend there would be a window of time for me to focus on The Lord and His plan for my life.   During that time I had moment after moment in which I felt the Holy Spirit whispering to me about a future in the Philippines.  To be honest, I did everything to avoid the gentle nudging of the Spirit.  I could not, however, deny the way my heart engaged as I played with children, passed out Bibles, and spent time ministering to my Filipino brothers and sisters.  The Holy Spirit began to reveal to me the truth in Psalms 37:4  “Delight yourself in the Lord and He will give you the desires of your heart.”  As I sought after the Lord’s desires and not my own, my heart began to feel more and more full.   I returned home and continued to seek the Lord about returning to the place I have come to love so much.

In March, I took a team of students to Mexico to volunteer at an orphanage for the week.  Again, I spent the time away talking to the Lord about what steps to take after resigning from my current job.  I was reading my Bible, and my decision was made clear after reading 1 John 3:16-20 (Message)
“This is how we've come to understand and experience love: Christ sacrificed his life for us. This is why we ought to live sacrificially for our fellow believers, and not just be out for ourselves. If you see some brother or sister in need and have the means to do something about it but turn a cold shoulder and do nothing, what happens to God's love? It disappears. And you made it disappear.  My dear children, let's not just talk about love; let's practice real love. This is the only way we'll know we're living truly, living in God's reality. It's also the way to shut down debilitating self-criticism, even when there is something to it. For God is greater than our worried hearts and knows more about us than we do ourselves.”

On July 15, I moved out of Leslie Hall… the dorm that has been my home for almost 9 years.  I have so many amazing memories here and will miss it so much, but I know that my time here has come to an end.   I have learned many things about myself and about the importance of living in community with others.  I have been blessed to work alongside some amazing people and have made life long friendships.

In September, I will board a plane and travel back to the Philippines.   I will join the Harvell family in spreading the gospel and encouraging local believers.    The Harvell’s work with the IMB and have lived in the Philippines for over 20 years.  I am so excited to take part in the work that they have already been doing and see how the Lord continues to work among the Filipino people in Manila and surrounding provinces.  I will spend most of my time in Lucena City living with a local pastor, his wife, and 2 children.  I will spend time doing outreach in the local baranquays (villages), encouraging in nearby churches, and connecting with students in surrounding universities.   In January, a team from SBU will arrive, and I will join them in ministry for 2.5 weeks and then travel with the team back to the states at the end of January.

I feel confident that the Lord is sending me on this journey, and I want to invite you to be a part of it as well.   I have created a blog: www.sarasnewjourney.blogspot.com and will be posting updates and prayer requests.  I am dependant on the Lord and your prayers and encouragement for the completion of this journey.  I also need financial support.  I am raising my own funds to pay for my ticket, housing, transportation, food, etc and will need approximately $4,500.00   Any funds you would be willing to give would be so appreciated.  If you have any questions or comments please feel free to contact me!  Thanks for being an important part of my life!

To new journeys and increased faith,
